Screening Support Services in Aotearoa New Zealand
About Screening Support Services
Screening Support Services (SSS) can assist those who experience barriers to accessing breast and cervical screening, assessment and treatment services.
Wāhine/whānau who are eligible to access SSS (see below) can be referred to, or directly request assistance from a SSS provider.
Some SSS providers have mobile teams who make community visits and home visits, while others are based in clinics around the motu. The teams are a mixture of clinical and non-clinical staff, inclusive of kaiāwhina / kaimahi (support staff).
Screening Support Services are available to assist you
For cervical screening, eligible people are:
- wāhine/whānau and people with a cervix, aged 25–69, who are Māori or Pacific, and
- all women and people with a cervix, aged 30–69, who have never had a cervical screen or have not had a cervical screen in the previous five years.
For breast screening, eligible people are:
- wāhine/whānau Māori and Pacific women aged 45–69, and
- all women aged between 45–69 who have never been screened or have not had a screen in the previous five years.
The National Cervical Screening Programme (NCSP) and BreastScreen Aotearoa (BSA) are part of the National Screening Unit (NSU) within Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand. The role of the NSU is to deliver safe, effective and equitable screening programmes nationwide to eligible populations.
The information below was last updated April 2023. New providers may be added to SSS over time, so check the website for the most current information about service providers.
Ki te kotahi te kākaho, ka whati; ki te kāpuia, e kore e whati.
If a reed stands alone, it can be broken; if it is in a group, it cannot.
Purpose: To support screening participants who experience barriers to access

Me aro koe ki te hā o Hineahuone.
Mai te timatanga, ko Papatūānuku, te whaea whenua, ko Hineahuone te ira tangata tuatahi, he wāhine. Tīhei Mauriora!
Pay heed to the dignity of wāhine Māori. From the beginning of time was Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, then Hineahuone the first human created a woman.
I sneezed and therefore I live!
